Article 370: Supreme Court to hear petitions challenging its scrapping on August 31

The Supreme Court will hear on August 31 a batch of petitions challenging the government’s decision to scrap Article 370 of the Constitution, which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

The petitions were filed by a group of lawyers, including former Union minister Yashwant Sinha, who have alleged that the Centre’s decision is unconstitutional and a violation of the rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

The petitioners have also sought the annulment of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, which was passed by Parliament in August last year to bifurcate the state into two Union territories, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

The Centre has defended its decision to scrap Article 370, saying it was necessary to integrate Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of the country and to bring about development in the region.

The Supreme Court is expected to take up the petitions on August 31 and hear arguments from both sides. It is likely to give its verdict on the matter in a few weeks.

The scrapping of Article 370 has been a highly controversial move, with both supporters and opponents of the decision. The petitioners who have challenged the government’s decision argue that it is a violation of the Constitution and that it will lead to instability in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Centre, on the other hand, has defended its decision, saying it is necessary for the development of Jammu and Kashmir. It has also said that the scrapping of Article 370 will not affect the rights of the people of the region.

The Supreme Court’s decision on the petitions is likely to be closely watched by the people of Jammu and Kashmir and by the rest of the country. It is also likely to have a significant impact on the future of the region.
