Dainik Jagran Journalist Killed in Bihar

In a terrible episode that highlights the mounting dangers to press freedom, a journalist working for the Dainik Jagran daily was shot and killed on Friday, August 18, in Bihar’s Araria region.

According to allegations from Araria Superintendent of Police, Ashok Kumar, the journalist, known as Vimal, was shot and killed by four assailants at around 5:30 a.m. in the area of the Raniganj market.

Vimal’s body has been taken into custody by police personnel for post-mortem examination, and a thorough inquiry into the circumstances leading up to his untimely death has been launched.

Notably, Vimal was not only a journalist but also the lone eyewitness to his brother’s murder, whom Kumar Shashibhushan, likewise shot to death four years earlier and known by the pseudonym Gabbu.

Tragically, Vimal leaves behind two grieving children: a boy who is 15 and a daughter who is 13.

The murder of Vimal adds to the mounting concern over the state of press freedom in India. Reporters Without Borders’ assessment of the country’s press freedom has shown a serious deterioration, placing India in a worrying 161st place out of 180 nations considered.
