One of Adi Shakti’s incarnations is Maa Brahmacharini. She represents the unmarried form of Goddess Parvati. Born in Daksha Prajapati’s home, she was a great Sati in this incarnation. Goddess Brahmacharini governs Lord Mangal, the provider of all fortunes. She is depicted with two hands, carrying a Jap Mala (prayer beads) in her right hand and holding a Kamandal (water pot) in her left. Her unwavering dedication and self-control inspire worshippers seeking inner strength and wisdom.

The Story of Maa Brahmacharini

According to Hindu scriptures, Maa Brahmacharini performed severe penance to win Lord Shiva as her husband. Her devotion was unwavering as she subsisted on a diet of Bilva leaves, flowers, fruits, and leafy vegetables, sleeping on the floor. She even fasted while enduring scorching summers, harsh winters, and stormy rains. Her determination touched Lord Brahma, who blessed her, and she became Lord Shiva’s consort.

However, tragedy struck when her father disrespected Lord Shiva. In her next birth, Maa Brahmacharini immolated herself, hoping for a father who would honor her husband. Her sacrifice symbolizes virtues like penance, renunciation, dispassion, and restraint.
