Significance of Sheetala Saptami

On the day of Sheetala Saptami, devotees wake up early in the morning and take a bath. After that, they clean their homes and decorate them with flowers and rangolis.

In the afternoon, devotees gather to perform the puja of Maa Sheetala. The puja is performed with the following steps:

• An idol of Maa Sheetala is placed on a pedestal.
• The idol is then bathed with milk, water, and honey.
• New clothes are offered to the idol.
• Flowers, fruits, and sweets are offered to the idol.
• Aarti is performed.

After the puja, devotees pray to Maa Sheetala for good health and protection from diseases.

Celebrating Sheetala Saptami

In addition to the puja rituals, there are some customary practices followed to celebrate Sheetala Saptami. Devotees partake in a meal of stale food, believing it pleases Maa Sheetala. Seven types of grains, including wheat, barley, rice, lentils, peas, beans, and sesame seeds, are also traditionally offered to the goddess. Observing a fast is another way some devotees choose to mark this day. This fast is broken only after the puja ceremony is complete.
