IIT-BHU Student Rape: Outrage as 3 Charged, Opposition Seeks Probe

Three guys allegedly caught, stripped and sexually attacked a 22-year-old student as she left her accommodation in the early hours of November 2.

Three persons were detained by the Uttar Pradesh police on Sunday and accused of gang rape after they reportedly sexually assaulted a student in November on the campus of the Indian Institute of Technology (now known as Banaras Hindu University). Two months after the institute saw protests, the arrests set off a political firestorm. The opposition claimed that the accused were being protected because they were associated with the BJP, an accusation that the ruling party refuted.

According to the FIR, a 22-year-old student was waylaid, stripped, and subjected to sexual assault by three guys in the early hours of November 2 when she left her dormitory to meet a friend. The three accused, who were on motorcycles, allegedly recorded the assault, according to the complainant.

Students staged rallies in response to the incident, calling for increased campus security.

The Indian Penal Code’s Section 354 (attack or criminal force against a woman with intent to shock her modesty) was invoked in the Lanka police station in response to the woman’s accusation, leading to the filing of a formal report. Gang rape was then included in the FIR as an additional offense.

In this case, three people have been taken into custody. Kunal Pandey has been recognized as them. Anand, also known as Abhishek Chauhan, and Saksham Patel, according to Atul Anjan Tripathi, assistant commissioner of police in Bhelupur.

The three accused, who are all in their 20s, were not IIT-BHU students, according to the police.

The state administration led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath came under fire when opposition leaders posted the alleged photos of the three suspects alongside other BJP leaders on social media.

He wrote, “The BJP’s Kunal Pandey, convener of the Mahanagar IT cell, and Saksham Patel, PA of Dilip Patel (Kashi zone president of the BJP), are the ones who gang-raped an IIT BHU student.”

However, according to Patel, Saksham was never his PA. “As a worker, he occasionally went with me, but he had severed his relationship with the BJP and me two months before the embarrassing incident.”
