Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has confirmed that he will contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi. This decision sets the stage for a significant electoral battle as Gandhi’s candidacy places him in direct competition with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Union minister Smriti Irani.

Amethi Lok Sabha constituency was once a Gandhi family pocket-borough, from where Rahul Gandhi had been contesting elections since 2004. However, he lost the seat to Irani in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections by a margin of around 55,000 votes.

Gandhi’s decision to contest from Amethi again is seen as a gamble. The constituency is considered to be a tough seat to win, especially after the party’s defeat in 2019. However, the Congress party is hoping that Gandhi’s popularity will help them to win the seat back.
