Asia Cup 2023: India Win Asia Cup for Record-Extending 8th Time After Siraj Picks 6/21

India won the Asia Cup for the eighth time by easily defeating Sri Lanka in the 2023 championship match. India last took home the trophy in 2018. As Sri Lanka was bowled out for 50 on Sunday, the lowest ODI team total against India, Mohammed Siraj got 6 for 21.

India defeated Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in the final of the 2023 Asia Cup on Sunday, September 17, to win the tournament for a record-extending 8th time. Mohammed Siraj was the star of the show for India, taking 6 wickets for 21 runs to bowl out Sri Lanka for just 50 runs, the lowest ODI team total against India.

Sri Lanka won the toss and opt to bat, and Siraj struck early to remove Pathum Nissanka for just 2 run. He then went on to pick up the wickets of Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga, and Maheesh Theekshana to complete a sensational six-wicket haul.

Sri Lanka were bowled out in just 15.2 overs, and India needed just 1.2 overs to chase down the target without losing a wicket. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill both scored unbeaten half-centuries to lead India to a comfortable victory.

India won the championship with 263 balls remaining and all 10 of their wickets still in tact after completing their target in just 6.1 overs. In terms of the number of remaining balls, this was India’s largest winning margin. The previous record was set in 2001 against Kenya, when they successfully tracked down a 91-point target with 231 extra balls.

Ishan Kishan was promoted up in the order to bat with Shubman Gill to start the inning.

Although there was no indication of rain at the toss, a drizzle caused the start of play to be delayed by 40 minutes. Before Mohammed Siraj put on one of the finest ever displays of fast bowling in the subcontinent, Jasprit Bumrah was the first to strike, dismissing Kusal Perera in the first over.

Mohammed Siraj destroyed the Sri Lankan batting order by taking four wickets in only six deliveries. Siraj eliminated Pathum Nissanka, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, and Dhananjaya de Silva in his second and third overs of Sri Lanka’s batting. Siraj took out the Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka in his subsequent over to set a record for the quickest five-wicket haul in one-day international bowling, doing so in only 2.4 overs.

After Stuart Binny (6 for 4), Anil Kumble (6 for 12), and Jasprit Bumrah (6 for 19), Mohammed Siraj has the fourth-best ODI stats (6 for 21). A team has never scored less against India in a one-day international, and Sri Lanka’s 50 all out is currently their second-lowest total in ODI history.

Despite entering the World Cup after winning the Cricket World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka has been highly good in the Asia Cup. In the Super 4, Sri Lanka fell to India in a hard-fought encounter before stunning Pakistan in a match interrupted by rain to go to the championship. Sri Lanka’s hitters shown a lack of effort in front of their supportive home crowd and suffered the price for poor shot selection against two of the best pacers in the world.

India’s victory in the Asia Cup was a fitting end to a dominant tournament for the team. They won all of their matches in the group stage, and then defeated Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the knockout stage.

India’s victory in the Asia Cup is a testament to the strength and depth of their squad. They have a world-class batting lineup, and their bowling attack is one of the best in the world. They will be one of the favorites to win the 2023 Cricket World Cup, which will be held in India later this year.
