India’s Survival Saga at Ranchi Test: Ashwin and Kuldeep’s Heroic Stand

The Ranchi Test remained in the balance as R Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav hammered England in the second session. Following a valiant comeback with the bat in the morning session, England lost half of their side while extending their lead to 166 runs as the two spinners grabbed control after lunch.

India used spin on both ends to start the second innings. Ben Duckett initially got a boundary each off Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja with a masterful usage of the sweep, but in the end, it was the off-spinner who emerged victorious. Duckett attempted to defend himself by lunging forward when the ball was flung up, but it ended up lobbed into the fielder’s hands at short leg.

The very next delivery, Ollie Pope was caught leg-before-wicket after failing to read Ashwin, dealing a severe blow to England. Replays showed that the ball would have clipped the stumps, hence the review was pointless.

On the third day, Joe Root and Crawley had to turn things around for the team that had lost momentum from the beginning. Taking on Ashwin, Crawley hit him for three fours in an over before adding another to his total in the following over. Mohammed Siraj gave the game a much-needed boost of pace, but it was Ashwin who continued to erode the lead for the visitors. Replays showed that Ashwin’s ball became sufficiently straight to strike the leg stump, confirming India’s confidence that they had eliminated Root.

Jonny Bairstow and Crawley were both compelled to increase their scoring rates due to the frequent wickets, and they both quickly amassed runs. When Kuldeep castled the opening for 60, Crawley’s happiness was short-lived as he reached his fifty. The opposing camp was further inconvenienced by Kuldeep when he also dismissed captain Ben Stokes a few minutes before the tea break.
